Relation among teaching, training and instruction Teaching involves certain modalities like conditioning, training and instruction. Each of the terms denotes some type of teaching. Teaching is a larger concept and each term is a part or aspect of this concept. Training refers to the systematic series of activities to guide or direct the behaviour of a person (or animal) to induce a certain pattern of pre-determined responses, particularly habitual responses. A trained person performs some actions, which are skillfully performed according to some regular pattern or role. This type of teaching is related mainly to a psychomotor domain. A trained person can perform a particular skill without understanding the basic principles or laws of this behaviour. Instruction is a higher level of teaching compared to training. It is mainly concerned with the development of knowledge and understanding of things, concepts, systems, processes etc. This mode of teaching requires thinking, reasoning, generalization etc. It helps acquire objectives related to the cognitive domain. Instruction can also be given through different ways even without direct face-to-face interaction. Therefore, it can be said that instruction is a part of teaching. Teaching is the broader term which includes instruction. Difference Between Teaching and Instruction Aspect Teaching Instruction Definition Explaining how something is done. Telling how something is done. Complexity More complex; involves techniques, strategies, and approaches. Less complex; simply involves giving directions. Dependency Learners are not fully dependent; they construct their own knowledge. Learners are dependent; instructions must be followed strictly. Duration A never-ending process. Has a specific end. Communication Two-way communication between teacher and learner. One-way communication from instructor to learner.   Difference Between Teaching and Training Aspect Teaching Training Focus Mostly related to theoretical concepts. Practical application of knowledge. Purpose Provides new knowledge. Equips a person with tools and techniques to develop specific skills. Objective Enriches the minds of the listeners. Moulds habits or performance of an individual. Context Usually within the academic world. Usually associated with the commercial world. Difference Between Instruction and Training Aspect Instruction Training Domain Related to the cognitive domain (knowledge and understanding). Related to the psychomotor domain (physical skills). Interaction Can be given without face-to-face interaction. Requires face-to-face interaction between trainer and trainee. Complexity More complex compared to training. Less complex compared to instruction. Objective Development of knowledge and understanding of concepts. Moulding habits or performance of an individual.
